Personality: 

Dumbledore is considered to be one of the greatest wizards of his generation, while also being one of the most beloved teachers at Hogwarts School.  He is a very clever and intelligent man with a gift for difficult and complicated magic, and is very knowledgeable across almost all magical areas of study.  At the same time, he is considered a very friendly, approachable person, and is well-liked by his students as well as by a large circle of wizarding colleagues & friends.  However, he does have a gift for defying and irritating authority, a habit which has gotten him into trouble with the Ministry of Magic and earned him enemies in the government.

In spite of his bad history with the phrase, Dumbledore’s morality is centered around the words his ex-paramour Grindelwald famously used: For the Greater Good.  His morals center always around doing the greatest amount of good possible, specifically preventing the most amount of deaths and bloodshed. However, he is morally shifty when it comes to <i>how</i> he accomplishes what he thinks is best.  He has no problem at all with lying, keeping secrets, or manipulating those around him so long as he feels it is for the best. And while he would never say so outright, he very often believes that he is the person who is most equipped to decide what, exactly, the best path is, even when that means that he keeps those plans secret from everyone else affected.

However, he is very much haunted with guilt for actions past, particularly those where his own plans and ideas had far-reaching consequences.  His greatest regret is the death of his sister, which he blame on his own pride leading to the fight between himself, his brother, and Grindelwald that ultimately killed her.  Secondary to that is his guilt for participating in Grindelwald’s schemes, and his own willingness to participate in what would ultimately become a campaign causing the deaths of countless people.  As a result, Dumbledore is an incredibly secretive person, with even those closest to him left unaware of his past, his family, and his romantic history with the greatest living Dark Wizard.

Dumbledore is also plagued by incredibly complicated feelings about Grindelwald’s rise in power.  Many members of the wizarding world (including Grindelwald himself) believe he is the only person who could beat Grindewald one-on-one.  However, Dumbledore is incredibly hesitant to do so, and feels guilt and shame for his reluctance. In spite of Grindelwald’s plans to kill him, he still has lingering feelings of love and affection for Grindelwald — a fact he has not shared with anyone and refuses to, knowing it could ruin his reputation and career.  He also fears that Grindelwald knows who, exactly, cast the spell that killed Dumbledore’s sister, and that he will reveal to Dumbledore that it was his own actions that directly killed her. There is also his connection to Credence Barebones, a link that has not been fully revealed in canon, but is clearly being exploited by Grindelwald to use against Dumbledore as part of the ongoing war.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Dumbledore has general magical ability as a wizard from the Harry Potter universe, and typically uses a wand in order to cast a wide variety of spells (though he has shown the ability to cast magic without his wand as well).  He is considered to be one of the most powerful wizards alive, and, as such, has a large range of spells he knows and is able to use. Some abilities include teleportation (Apparition), transfiguration, healing, and Legilimency (a form of telepathy).

Since Dumbledore is considered especially powerful, the warping of his powers will be especially disastrous.  Apparition will always result in some level of splinching (where pieces of a person are left behind accidentally during teleportation). Legilimency can be used, but any thoughts heard will sound cloudy and be interfered with by an unknown voice.  Regular spells will only work intermittently, and with a varying level of success depending on the magic involved. Any attempts at healing will automatically backfire and cause injury instead.

After several days in this new, unfamiliar place, Dumbledore was left with the sensation of something being corrupted in him, his entire being feeling off-kilter.  Magic had always felt like a piece of him, flowing through his body like the blood in his veins, always there just under the surface. In this place, though, it felt as though that part of him had withered away, as if his hand or foot had suddenly become unusable.

Summoning items only worked on sporadic attempts, and even then, the items would zoom too fast or float much more slowly than anticipated.  His deluminator had stopped functioning for anything larger than a single candle. Dumbledore had, foolishly, tried to Apparate at some point and immediately injured himself.  The attempt left a hunk of his own skin missing from his arm that he quickly had to bandage, since any attempts at healing only made the situation worse.

(He had the vial with him as well, which still swirled with his blood as always.  Would it still work here in this place? Would breaking it solve anything in a place made from dreams?)

It was all quite unsettling, and yet in its own strange way, it was <i>fascinating</i>.  Dumbledore had never known life without magic, growing up surrounded by his parents’ talents, always knowing exactly who he was and what he would be capable of.  He’d excelled far beyond what any usual wizard could do in terms of power, and even been considered one of the most capable wizards of his generation — and then he’d arrived here, where that counted for nothing, where he was as prone to accident as any first-year student in one of his classes.

Perhaps it was just the challenge of it, but it was all very interesting.  Dumbledore felt as if he had been hobbled on one leg, or one hand had been tied behind his back.  And yet that forced his mind to be all the more active, his curiosity piqued and his focus on high alert.  He was only half as capable as he once was, but he could let his cleverness fill in the gap, seeking out answers and solutions that he might once have overlooked.

This place was strange and unsettling, that was for certain.  But that did not make it any less intriguing.

What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: I love the elevation of normal human fears and emotions using horror tropes.  For example, I love the film Hereditary and the way it takes normal human emotions around grief/loss and elevates them with a supernatural plot around ghosts & cults, or how films like Silence of the Lambs can be used to discuss sexism in society/the workplace.
